What is the Camarilla?

The Camarilla is an international social organization sanctioned by White Wolf, Inc. which revolves around the gothic-horror genre set in White Wolf's World of Darkness. We are world-renown for our continuous Live-Action Role-Playing (LARP) game that spans ten countries on five continents.

Fan Club

In the Camarilla our primary focus is to bring the fun in fandom through member involvement, to encourage individual creativity and personal expression, and to serve as a medium where people may congregate with a common interest in the vampire mythos and gothic horror.

Creating your own vampire or werewolf character to roleplay at certain Camarilla Chapter functions, designing costumes, writing fiction and poetry, and creating artwork are just a few of the examples of how members can contribute to the club.

Community Service

We are also a community service organisation, creating a sense of community amongst ourselves and the greater community around us. In this vein we encourage members to not only expand their creative and literary horizons, but to also improve the neighbourhoods and cities in which they live.

Misconceptions

We wish to convey in this introduction that the Camarilla's focus on the vampire is as a romantic and fictional figure, and we avoid delving into the blood drinking or violent aspects commonly associated with this creature. Fandom has gained a sufficiently bad reputation from roleplaying games already without encouraging the misconception that we are a cult of some kind.

For further information, check out the The International Camarilla Homepage or the The Australian National Camarilla Homepage.

What is Live Action Role Playing (LARP)?

Live Action Role Play, usually abbreviated as LARP, is an extension of the more common table top role-playing game. LARP is quite different from table top gaming and is best described as improvisational theater--a play where you are an actor who creates the script of the story by taking actions and making presentations.

Because of its theatrical nature, LARP is more accessible to a much larger audience than many role-playing games. Players need to know far less about the rules and mechanics of the game though they must be more willing to become an actor and present the embodiment of the character they are trying to portray.

What is the Harbour of Darkness ?

The Camarilla is organised on a 'pyramidical' structure, with the International Camarilla at the top, who co-ordinate all the different National Camarilla groups, such as the US, the UK, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Netherlands, and of course the Australian Camarilla.

The Australian Camarilla then has several Domains, being geographical locations such as cities. Each Domain then runs several different games, or Venues, each centered around one of the 'species' in the World of Darkness game. The Harbour of Darkness (known as the HoD) is the Camarilla Domain for Sydney, and it co-ordinates all the Sydney Venues, coordinating larger-scale events, controlling the interaction of the roleplaying games between the Venues, and generally making sure things run as well as possible

How do I make a Character?

New and existing members introducing a character to the global game start with a character concept and background and work this into a Character Sheet model. This gives the character the ability to be played in the Camarilla games. Characters advance through the accumulation of experience points awarded for game participation.

As the games are based in the World of Darkness System provided by White Wolf, the World of Darkness Storyteller Rulebook and its expansions are used for character creation. These rules are then combined with the Minds Eye System that enables character to be played in a LARP environment.

The Domain Storyteller or Venue Storytellers should be contacted in regards to character creation and any information regarding characters and rules.

Members can also earn the privilege of playing more complex or experienced characters through service to the club. Both reward systems are not based on time but on participation and organizational support and is equally available to all members.
